Hilandar trip for Zemun Gymnasium and Mathematical Grammar School students

10/11/2024

Zemun Gymnasium and Mathematical Grammar School students visited Greece from September 23 to 25, 2024. The pilgrimage was a gift from the Holy Monastery of Hilandar.

The trip was organized as part of a project for children and youth called “Hilandar Lighthouse,” which was initiated as a spiritual and creative framework for the encounter of Hilandar and young people.

Twenty-four students were selected through a literary competition in which they had the opportunity to choose one of the offered topics: “What do I expect from Hilandar?”, “Is Mount Athos important for modern man (humanity/world) and why?”, “What do I know about Hilandar, and what would I like to learn?” and “The message of the modern world (man) to the silence of Hilandar,” with three first prizes awarded. This year, students from the Mathematical Grammar School also participated in the competition.

The students, accompanied by their teachers, visited the Holy Imperial Serbian Lavra Hilandar, Ierissos, the Hilandar metochion Kakovo, and the Monastery of Saint Lydia in Asprovalta.

The students spent two days in Hilandar, while the female students had the opportunity to sail along the southwestern coast of Mount Athos and visit the Monastery of Saint Lydia.

On the last day of the trip, the Most Reverend Archimandrite Metodije, abbot of the Hilandar Monastery, and the Hilandar monks welcomed the students at the Hilandar metochion Kakovo.

This reward trip has been organized for the fourth time since 2021, and as before, it was arranged by the Endowment of the Holy Monastery of Hilandar from Belgrade.
